EXPLORATION

Maier-1 a duster

THE Maier-1 offshore exploration well in the Carnarvon Basin, Western Australia is being plugged and abandoned after failing to intersect any significant hydrocarbons, joint venture partner Tap reports.

Located in WA-290-P, 63km west of Barrow Island and 20km west-northwest of the Woollybutt oil field, Maier-1 was drilled to its total depth as planned.

It was targeting an interpreted four-way dip closure in the Barrow Group and Zeepard formation levels and was the first of two wells in WA-290-P. Although good reservoirs were intersected within the target formations, the lack of shows indicates that there was probably no structural closure present at this location, according to Tap.

The next well in the program will be Lauda-1 located 8km to the west, also in WA-290-P. Lauda-1 is targetting the same formations as Maier-1 but is interpreted to have a closure against a regional fault.

WA-290-P joint venture partners are OMV Barrow Pty Ltd (0perator) 50%, Nippon Oil Exploration (Australia) Pty Ltd 25% and Tap (Shelfal) Pty Ltd 25%.
