BHP said in its production report for the March 2008 quarter that output had increased 19% on the previous corresponding quarter.
The company added that strong facility and reservoir performance had helped to offset natural field decline, unplanned interruption at the North-West Shelf and the impact of cyclones on activities in Western Australia.
The company's oil production in the Bass Strait was 9.66 million barrels for the nine months to March 31, 2008, down from 10.3MMbbl in the previous corresponding period due to natural field decline.
The group's UK and Algerian liquids production also declined.
In the Gulf of Mexico, BHP's share of production from Atlantis during the March quarter was 3.3 million barrels of oil and 1.54 billion cubic feet of gas while Genghis Khan, which is part of the Shenzi area project, produced 194,000bbl and 60 million cubic feet of gas.
In natural gas, production was down from the December 2007 quarter due to expected lower seasonal gas demand in southeast Australia and the interruption at the North-West Shelf.
