The company's backdown only applies to 71 company-owned outlets and clears the way for surcharging at up to 1730 Caltex and Ampol franchised and distributor-owned service stations, and more than 400 StarMart and StarShop stores.

The Reserve Bank recently announced reforms to the credit market aimed at making it more efficient, transparent and competitive. The reforms, effective from 1 January, paved the way for merchants to pass on the costs they accrued for allowing customers to pay by credit and charge cards.
