PNG Gas project sweats on Qld Govt decision

The viability of the $7 billion ExxonMobil-led PNG Gas project depends upon winning a supply contract for the proposed Townsville power station, according to a senior ExxonMobil executive.

"Failure to gain it will mean a fundamental reassessment of the project's viability," said Robert Franklin, the Houston-based vice president of new business development for ExxonMobil Gas Marketing, at an energy conference in Brisbane.

The Queensland Government is expected to decide by the end of next month which of three short-listed Townsville power projects to pick. One would use PNG gas while the other two projects intend to use coal seam methane.

In March, the PNG Gas Project received a big boost after the producers signed a gas supply agreement with Australian Gas Light Company. The deal involved AGL purchasing up to 50 petajoules of gas for delivery from PNG into Moomba over a 20 year period commencing in 2006.
