Caution urged for private LPG use

Safe sausage sizzling is a key message from WA's Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR) this summer, as many Australians crank up their gas-fuelled barbeques.

Safe refilling procedures and safe storage of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders will help ensure summer remains incident free, said Malcolm Russell, Director of DoIR's Safety Health and Environment Division.

"It's important to be aware that it is illegal to fill LPG cylinders from automotive dispensers at your local service station," said Russell.

"Automotive LPG may contain blends that have not been tested or approved for other appliances.

"Instead, cylinders should be refilled from an LP gas outlet specifically designed for this purpose.

And if your vehicle is parked close to the refuelling area, allow sufficient time for flammable vapours to dispense before starting your engine up.

"People should ensure the cylinder they are using is in good condition," said Russell.

"Look for dents and creases on the cylinder, and make sure it is stamped with a current cylinder test date."

Cylinders need to be tested every 10 years to make sure they are in good working condition, so if your cylinder is out of date, contact an LPG cylinder distributor to find out where you can get it checked.

"Once the refill is completed, the cylinders should be stored in a clean area, away from other combustible materials, to reduce fire risk," said Russell.

"When you connect the cylinder to your barbeque, check for leaks at the connection point by applying soapy water."

If you have any questions on how to refill, store or handle LPG cylinders, fire extinguishers, fuel drums, and the legal limits on dangerous goods storage quantities, contact the Dangerous Goods Duty Inspector at the Department of Industry and Resources on 9222 3413.
