GAIL to build South India gas grid, pushes for national network

Gas Authority India Ltd (GAIL) is about to begin construction of a South India gas grid to transport gas from Petronet LNG’s planned Kochi terminal.

GAIL chairman and MD Proshanto Banerjee said the first stretch of the grid would be sited in Kerala state. It would also be synchronised with the commissioning of the 5 million tonne Kochi terminal.

The GAIL chief also said the state-run firm would continue to push for the setting up of a national gas grid. It wants to run this grid as proposed by the previous Indian government despite the objections of other Indian oil and gas firms.
