Chinese province to invest in major power projects

The Sichuan provincial government has earmarked US$8.7 billion to build several large power projects this year and next. Its goal is to be able to have an installed power capacity of 32.6 million kW by 2005.

To facilitate such goals, the Sichuan government will invest in four large hydropower stations along the Dadu, Yalong and Jinsha rivers and a clutch of medium-to-large hydropower stations near the cities of Chengdu, Deyang, Mianyang, Leshan and Neijiang.

Also in the pipeline are 10 large thermal power plants near the coal-production regions of Yibin, Luzhou, Guangan and Dazhou.
