West Natuna gas stoppage causes Singapore blackout

Singapore was hit by a nationwide power blackout last Tuesday when gas supplies from Indonesia were disrupted. The island nation, which prides itself on its ultra-modern infrastructure, was plunged into darkness from 10pm-12am.

West Natuna gas stoppage causes Singapore blackout

The country’s electricity authorities have begun their investigations on the cause of the disruption of supplies from the West Natuna gas field, which is the third such disruption in two years.

In a statement Energy Market Authority spokesperson Choo Wai Chan said, “The West Natuna gas coming in from Indonesia … was disrupted. The three power plants affected by Tuesday’s gas-supply failure had switched to alternative sources to restore the current.”

While Choo did not elaborate further, it is understood Singapore also pipes in natural gas from Sumatra and from Malaysia to power its power plants.
