Petronas, Shell plug pipeline leaks

A joint Petronas and Shell operation has plugged two leaks in an underwater pipeline transporting...

The leaks caused a 2 km oil slick at the Kiansam beach in south-western Labuan Island. The beach is adjacent to the oil terminal and the Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan campus.

In a statement Labuan Corp CEO Abidin Arshad said, “[Petronas] moved in to repair the leaks on Wednesday immediately after discovering them.”

“The cleaning up work [is] continuing [and] there have been no new oil slicks since then,” he added.

More than 100 workers from the two firms are currently involved in cleaning up the affected area.
