Vessel crash causes massive Chinese oil spill

A COLLISION with the German-registered MSC Ilona container vessel and the Panama-registered Hyund...

According to an Associated Press report, the spill covers an area about 16km long and 200 metres wide. The spill comes from the Ilona which had its side punctured in the collision.

“It is the worst ocean pollution ever in five years,” a ministry of communications spokesperson told Reuters.

Various reports indicated the Chinese authorities were attempting to contain and clean-up the spill but their efforts have been hampered by strong winds and high seas in the area, which is expected to continue for several days at least.

Chinese marine authorities have apprehended the Hyundai Advance. The vessel was traced hours later after it had illegally left the area.
