The order is part of a surge of large-scale orders being experienced by Hyundai Heavy in the year to date, with orders also for four 8600 TEU containerships and five 4700 TEU containerships from Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), three 6500 TEU containerships from Hanjin Shipping, four 4900 TEU containerships from the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, and four 82,000 cubic metre LPG carriers from a European ship owner.

Five of the nine vessels ordered by the HMM will be produced by HHI and the rest will be constructed by HHI’s unlisted subsidiary, Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI).

The 8600 TEU containerships will measure 339.6m in length and be powered by HHI’s 14-tonne diesel engine (108,920 horsepower) providing a service speed of 27 knots. The 4700 TEU containerships will be 294.1m long. All of the containerships will be delivered by 2008.

These recent orders bring HHI’s order backlog up to 240 ships, which are collectively valued at US$17 billion and will keep the shipyards busy for the next three years.
