Premier Peter Beattie and energy minister Stephen Robertson yesterday announced that the company will spend $8.37 million on network maintenance and a works blitz in the Brisbane areas worst-affected during last summer's major storms.

Under its Suburban Sensitive Area Project Energex will target vegetation management, maintenance and repair work in the worst-affected areas.

"Energex is targeting the worst-affected areas to improve network reliability and minimise the risk of power outages in time for the coming summer storm season," said Beattie.

The project includes $2.65 million on vegetation management to trim trees away from powerlines and a further $5.72 million on construction works to improve network reliability.

"Energex carries out vegetation management and other work in every suburb but this is a special program to carry out extra work in the areas it has identified as being at most risk.”

"There isn't an electricity network in the world that doesn't suffer damage from storms but Energex is working flat out to strengthen the network to ensure it minimises the risk of outages during the storm season," said Beattie.
