Site construction is expected to start in January 2006. Exmouth Power Station Pty Ltd, the company that will build, own and operate the new station, has placed orders for most of the equipment required.

Manufacture of the seven Caterpillar gas-fired generating engines started in October and delivery is scheduled for April 2006.

The gas compressors will be delivered in June 2006 and an order for the composite cylinders used to transport the gas has also been placed.

The final design to connect the new power station to the distribution network has been completed and all new power lines will be installed underground, mainly within existing road reserves. Western Power will appoint a contractor to carry out this work in early 2006.

The project team has also selected a preferred supplier for road trains to carry compressed natural gas from the compressor station to the new power station.

The $A31 million power station will comprise seven 1MW gas-engine generators and a standby 1MW diesel-engine generator. Generating capacity is expected to increase to 11 or 12MW to meet increases in customer demand over the life of the 18-year contract.

The Exmouth power station is expected to be operational in July 2006.
