The category three storm is affecting the northern coast from Wallal to Onslow, taking in Port Hedland and Karratha and extending inland to Paraburdoo, Tom Price, Newman, Jigalong and Three Rivers.
Woodside, Chevron and Santos are all reported to have recalled personnel from offshore facilities throughout the region.
Chevron evacuated personnel from its Ocean America and Atwood Osprey drilling rigs as well as non-essential personnel from the Gorgon project site on Barrow Island.
Woodside removed personnel from its Pluto and Karratha gas facilities, while Santos stopped its Fletcher Finucane project in the Carnarvon Basin.
The storm is estimated to be carrying winds of up to 200 kilometres per hour near its centre, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting severe weather reaching far inland to the Gascoyne and possibly the northern Goldfields.
