Tankers explode

IT has been a bad few days for oil tankers, with a driver escaping an exploding tanker near Derby in Western Australia, and more than 100 killed when a tanker burst into flames in South Sudan.

In WA's north, a driver had a lucky escape after his truck rolled and burst into flames, the state's police said.

WA Police and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services were called to the triple road train rollover about 7.30pm on Wednesday night.

The crash occurred on the Great Northern Highway, about 100km east of Derby and 150km west of Fitzroy Crossing.

The truck was said to be carrying crude oil.

Energy News has been unable to confirm if the truck was carrying oil from Buru Energy's Ungani field, which is exporting oil via temporary facilities at the Port of Wyndham.

Ungani produced more than 470,000 barrels on its extended production test, and has produced two cargoes for sale since being put into full production.

While the driver escaped unharmed, the road had to be closed for much of the night while police and emergency services cleaned up the scene.

Sudan trouble

In South Sudan at least 100 people were killed when an oil truck that had veered off the road exploded after a crowd had gathered in an attempt to siphon fuel from the tank.

Another 50 people were seriously wounded, and South Sudan's government says it does not have the medical facilities to treat the wounded.

The incident took place on Wednesday as the truck was travelling to South's Sudan's Western Equatoria region from the capital Juba.

It is not the first time a truck has exploded in the same circumstances, because tankers often have to travel long distances along potholed unsealed roads and pass through poor communities.
