Despite being a human-caused climate change sceptic (like many geos) I am generally comfortable with moves to conserve energy and a move to alternatives (such as geothermal), but the concept of biofuels (especially when forced on the developing world) is a major worry. I spent a period as a volunteer on local wages in PNG so cannot be categorised as a total redneck!

Biofuels are possibly OK when they are using waste from, say, sugar cane (although energy and economic cost benefit analyses may prove otherwise) but when government sudsidies are invoked and Third World aid programs are tied to promoting biofuels it makes my blood boil.

Putting aside the economics - I have a simple question - burning biofuels for energy still produces CO2, yes or no? Maybe less CO2 than fossil fuels, but so what? At what cost?
