COAL SEAM METHANE

Blue wraps up first seismic shoot

BLUE Energy has completed a 2D seismic survey in one of its Bowen Basin permits, which the company said had coal seam methane and conventional petroleum potential comparable to nearby projects.

The company told the market that despite persistent wet weather, the 82.3km 2D Cobalt seismic survey was completed within budget.

This survey was undertaken to appraise the CSM and conventional petroleum potential of Bowen Basin permit ATP 854P, central Queensland, to identify drilling locations for early next year.

Blue said this permit contained CSM potential in the Permian-aged coal-bearing Bandanna formation, analogous to the Santos’ Fairview and Origin’s Spring Valley fields.

This survey area is also considered to be prospective for conventional petroleum accumulation, however has been under-explored.

“The Cobalt survey will be integrated into the existing understanding of the area to define potential petroleum traps as drillable targets, or to better define the hydrocarbon trapping potential within the ATP toward more detailed future seismic acquisition surveying,” Blue said.

“Conventional petroleum accumulations are analogous to the nearby Denison Trough and Roma Shelf Gas fields.”

Blue said the seismic crew was moving to its Surat Basin permit ATP 818P to undertake a second survey for the company.

The 75km 2D Indigo survey is designed to assess the Jurassic Walloon coal measures that are highly productive for CSM in other parts of the basin.

Similar to ATP 854P, the 75km seismic survey results will be used to direct future exploration in the tenure, including core drilling and eventual pilot development.

Acquisition of this seismic survey is also expected to take one week.

Blue said the Walloon coal measures in this permit were analogous to Santos’ Coxon Creek and Sunshine Gas’ Lacerta prospects, as well as the more recent Taringa South-1 gas flow in the adjacent tenure.

“A number of potential leads have been identified using data from previous petroleum and coal exploration in the area, and will be developed during exploration studies towards drillable exploration targets,” Blue said.

Blue Energy holds, or has joint venture interest in over 28,000 square kilometres of Queensland exploration acreage, over 12 leases in the Bowen/Surat, Galilee, Clarence Moreton and Maryborough Basins, considered prospective for CBM and conventional petroleum.
