Tamboran spins the drill at next Beetaloo well

TAMBORAN Resources has spud its next exploration and appraisal well at its Amungee pilot project in the Beetaloo Sub-Basin of the Northern Territory.

Tamboran spins the drill at next Beetaloo well

The Amungee-2 horizontal well is being drilled by the Silver City Rig 40 in Tamboran's newly acquired acreage.

The well will be drilled vertically to a depth of around 2450 metres before a 1000m horizontal section targeting the Mid-Velkerri shale.

The Velkerri formation has proved commercially viable across multiple other projects in the Beetaloo including Empire Energy's project nearby.

Once the well is drilled, Tamboran will conduct an extensive fraccing program across the horizontal.

The frac program is based on US techniques and also includes data from other explorer's projects in the basin.

"The fracture stimulation program has been designed by Tamboran's operational team, who have drilled more than 5000 unconventional wells in North America," Tamboran CEO Joel Riddle said.

Learnings from Santos' Tanumbirini 2H and 2H will be incorporated. Tamboran holds a 25% interest in those two wells so access to data is available.

Tambora noted that the previous well in its campaign - Maverick-1V - was drilled in 18.3 days. The vertical section of Amungee-2 should take a similar timeframe.

"The drilling and fracture stimulation of the Amungee-2H well, the first of two wells, will be fully funded by Tamboran as part of stage three of the farm-in agreement with Falcon," Riddle said.

"The location of the second well, which we are aiming to drill after Amungee-2H, is currently being evaluated."

Tamboran aims to have the Amungee project up and running with first gas by 2025.

It will produce 100 terajoules of gas per day, all contracted to Origin Energy.

Tamboran is operator of the exploration permit EP 98 with a 38.75% interest alongside Sheffield (38.75%) and Falcon Oil and Gas (22.5%).

It closed its acquisition of EP 98 from Origin Energy just this week

The deal included three permits - EP 98, EP 117 and EP 76 - making Tamboran the biggest acreage holder in the Beetaloo with 1.9 million net acres and 2U contingent gas resources of 116 trillion cubic feet.

To fund both the permit work commitments and acquisition, Tamboran raised A$195 million via a placement and a share purchase plan.

The institutional placement included a $98 million private placement of shares to strategic partners and US cornerstone investors, supported by investments of $30 million by Sheffield and $22 million by Helmerich and Payne.

Helmerich & Payne is the largest onshore drilling contractor in the US and will ship over its own 2000 horsepower FlexRig for drilling activities next year.
