The well was drilled in the joint petroleum development area, JPDA 06-105, about 500km off the Australian coast to a total depth of 3568m.

Eni as operator said in a statement that the well highlighted a significant presence of hydrocarbons, with initial test results indicating a flow rate of 6100bopd.

The data will now be interpreted to assess the potential dimension of the discovery, the company said.

"This discovery reinforces Eni's presence and growth potential in the region," it said.

Eni has a 40% stake in the permit, in partnership with Inpex (35%) and Talisman Resources (25%).

Eni also has a 10.99% stake in the producing Bayu-Undan gas-condensate field and related LNG facilities; a 100% stake of the Blacktip gas field, currently under development; and an 80% stake in five exploration blocks located between the southern coastline of Timor-Leste and the northern boundary of the JPDA.
