SPEAKING at the FPSO World Congress in Singapore last week MTC Engineering CEO Mohd Fauzi Ya’Akob explained his company’s plans for simple FPSOs, subbed “Hummingbirds” that are designed to develop marginal fields.

Ophir was unfortunately a failure, but the FPSO design is sound, MTC said.

The simplicity of MTC's Hummingbird FPSOs ultimately stood in contrast to the complexity of the field its Ledang oil tanker conversion was sent to develop, the marginal Ophir field that Melbourne's Octanex was working in partnership with Petronas and subsidiaries until recently 
 
MTC's models are cheaper and the design process and stages are streamlined.
