No risk to power supply: Vic Energy Minister

With three power plants out of action due to maintenance, the Victorian Government is working frantically to reassure power users that their supply is not at risk.

The Loy Yang Power station pulled a second 500 MW generator out of service for urgent maintenance last week while Yallourn Energy is currently repairing a 350 MW unit.

"There is no risk to supply in the foreseeable future. We only risk shortage in Victoria if we lose another major generator in conjunction with an extreme heatwave," said Victorian Treasurer and acting Energy Minister, Mr John Brumby.

Energy users have recently become critical of the delicate balance of supply and demand in the privatised electricity industry in Victoria and South Australia. They believe the governments and regulators have had ample time to reduce the risk of blackouts and power restrictions which dogged the two southern states two years ago.
