Tanker leaks crude in the Mediterranean

A MALTESE-REGISTERED oil tanker leaked crude into the Mediterranean Sea off Egypt's north coast on Saturday 20 November, according to the Egyptian government. The leak was blamed on a “technical problem”.

“The tanker Good Hope had stopped leaking oil but there was a spill about 1 km square in size about 1 km from Egypt’s north coast, east of the port city of Alexandria,” a government statement said.

Local authorities were cleaning up the spill and there were no plans to close ports on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast.
