"I think it is relatively close," Reuters reported Shell CEO Ben van Beurden saying at a news conference.

"We were in roughly the same region. The operation that we had on the unconventional exploration programme in that general area is on hold, as a matter of fact it was technically on hold for evaluation purposes."

"We've also declared force majeure, as you can imagine, simply because we cannot continue the operations there."

With Western economic sanctions on Russia worsening since the MH17 disaster, the CEO reportedly said it was too early to assess their impacts.

He reportedly added that EU sanctions mainly affected oil projects, so its Sakahalin 2 LNG interests might not be affected.

Shell is also a partner in the Salym oil project in Western Siberia.
