Novus scores with Carat-1in East Java, farms out in Pakistan

Following on the heels of its successful discovery at Tanggulangin well, Novus has made a second successful gas discovery in the Brantas Production Sharing Contract (PSC) onshore East Java. A drill stem test on Carat-1 conducted across the 494-500m interval, in the lower part of an 11m thick gas bearing zone, flowed 2.3 million cubic feet of gas at 630 psi through 24/64" choke size.

Novus said that given the similarity with gas producing reservoirs in the nearby Wunut field, it was considered unnecessary to test the upper part of the sand. Preparations are now underway to spud Grati-1, which will be the final well in current drilling program, Novus added. The participants in the Brantas PSC are Novus Petroleum (50%) and Lapindo Brantas Inc (Operator) 50%.

While Novus Petroleum has scored again in south east Asia, in central Asia the company has farmed out half of its 47.5% interest in the Bolan Petroleum Concession, Pakistan, to the Islamabad-based Mari Gas Company. As a result of this farmout, Novus's stake has been reduced to 23.75% while Mari Gas will pay a contribution to historical costs plus its share of the exploration well, Zarghun North-1, which is currently being drilled.

Novus added Mari Gas might elect to participate in development of the Zarghun South reserves by paying a further contribution to historical costs. Novus' share price rose 5c to $2.05 at time of writing.
