Timor Sea boundary talks set for this month

Officials talks between Australian and East Timorese officials aimed at settling the Timor Sea boundary will take place in Bali later this month. The boundary issue was set aside in last negotiations to replace the Timor Gap Treaty signed in 1989 between Australia and Indonesia. Many commentators, with one even describing it as "piratical", condemned the original 1989 treaty.

Last year, Oceanic Exploration and PetroTimor launched legal action against last year's agreement, claiming they were granted rights by Portugal in 1974 to explore and develop the petroleum resources under the seabed adjacent to Portuguese administered Timor. The East Timorese are likely to take the issue to World Court, however, commentators say the action in unlikely to succeed.
