Victoria gets another power station

The Environmental Protection Authority of Victoria has given approval to Singapore Power to build the first of two stages of a gas-fired power station at Laverton North. The new plant will produce a maximum 400 megawatts when both stages have been completed.

The EPA gave approval for the construction of four separate gas turbine configurations, which range from 84.2MW to 268MW. The cost of the four configurations will be in the vicinity of $55-$175 million with construction due to begin in January 2003.

During 2003, Singapore Power will make a decision on stage two of the project. The addition of the Singapore Power-owned facility will add another 3137MW to Victoria's power supplies, according to commentators.
