"This first gas production is a major milestone for the project and for AWE," the company said in a startement.
"As previously announced by the project operator [Origin Energy], the introduction of raw gas to the platform will allow the commissioning of the offshore platform and the packing of the 187km raw gas pipeline to the onshore gas plant at Lang Lang.
"Furthermore, the initial gas production will allow for product sales to commence in February 2005 with the ramp up to design flow rates expected in March 2005."
The BassGas project has been dogged by delays with the original contractor, Clough Ltd, and the BassGas partners blaming each other for the hold-ups.
Clough was ejected from the project in mid December and Downer Engineering was appointed to complete the remaining rectification works and modify the offshore facilities and onshore processing plant to handle some impurities in the gas stream.
