Ageing NZ plant faces the chop

THE long-term future of Huntly, New Zealand's largest coal and gas-fired power station, hangs in the balance, with electricity bought on the spot market being cheaper at times for owner Genesis Energy.

However, the newer, more efficient 400MW and 48MW gas-fired units at Huntly should continue providing important baseload contributions until at least 2016, when gas demand may exceed supply.
