TOTAL’S senior vice president of innovation and energy efficiency, Jerome Schmitt, told the crowd at Melbourne’s Greenhouse Gas Technology Conference-14 that he “had no slides but many convictions to share” with the audience.

Chief among those, which numbered seven, was that carbon capture and storage was "absolutely critical" to emissions reduction. 
 
The issues surrounding CCS at times sound very similar to some of those faced by Australia's upstream sector - that a sceptical public is unsure how CCS may fully work but pretty sure they don't like it. 
 
"It is a matter for public-private cooperation but it has not succeeded yet," Schmitt said, noting partnerships were still far too weak to be effective. 
 
Stakeholder perception and management are essential as "we may believe it is safe and technologically proven but to them it is neither".
