Energy storage could struggle to reach full potential

GLOBAL law firm White & Case have released a report into the opportunities, key trends and market drivers on energy storage. Findings showed that the deployment of battery storage technology is gaining pace, but that it may struggle to reach its full potential worldwide until energy regulation and financing solutions adapt.

The report also highlighted that Tesla's South Australian 100 megawatt powerpack project is already touted as having reduced capacity costs for the Australian Energy Market Operator by 90%.

While battery storage has traditionally been seen as a supplement to the Australian power generation mix, the technology being developed and minor changes to policy are helping bring battery energy storage to the forefront of a changing energy industry.

However, regulations and financing are struggling to keep pace with developing technology, and the traditional view of battery storage as a supplement or back-up to grid service is doing little to help growth in the fledgling industry.
