Oman to get four more LNG tankers

The Omani government has ordered four new LNG carriers from shipyards in Japan and Korea. The vessels, named Ibri, Nizwa, Salalah and Ibra, each with 145,000 cubic metres capacity, are due to be delivered by 2006 and will be charted to the state-owned Oman Shipping Co.

Currently, Oman has two LNG carriers, the Sohar LNG and Muscat LNG.

Oman’s Minister of National Economy and Deputy Chairman of the Financial Affairs & Energy Resources Council Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki said, “We have signed agreements with Mitsubishi Corp and Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) for constructing a new vessel to be named after Ibri. The new vessel is under construction in Japan at [Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’] shipyard in Nagasaki.”

“Agreements were also signed with Itochu Corp and MOL for building Nizwa LNG, which is under construction in Japan at Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corp’s shipyard in Sakaide; [as well as] agreements with MOL for two LNG vessels, being built by Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea, named after Salalah and Ibra,” he added.
