LNG (LIQUIFIED NATURAL GAS)

Thailand forms LNG unit, looks at new facilities

Thailand’s PTT Plc has announced the establishment of the PTT LNG Co unit to handle all procurement and regassification of LNG for the state-run energy company, with billions of dollars of work probably required to develop the nation’s gas infrastructure.

In a statement PTT President Prasert Bunsumpun said, “PTT LNG will implement a multibillion-dollar investment for LNG infrastructure, including a 3-5 million tonne per year LNG receiving terminal, regasification plant, and related facilities, all scheduled to be on stream in 2010.”

“PTT projects that Thailand’s current natural gas demand of 2.6 to 2.7 bcf per day will grow by more than 7% per year during 2004-2010 [and] the company has been looking at procuring LNG from Iran, Oman, and other sources,” added Prasert.

Currently, PTT holds a 100% stake in the unit but Prasert has hinted PTT may allow other firms to become strategic partners.
