Blackback to be plugged and abandoned

EXXONMOBIL has updated the environmental plan for the permanent plugging and abandonment of some of its most remote Gippsland Basin assets, but which are adjacent to its new deepwater exploration wells.

Blackback started production 20 years ago.

The company is hoping for a decision from NOPSEMA by the end of the month to allow it to use the Ocean Monarch rig over a 70-day period before the end of the year at the conclusion of the A$120 million Baldfish-1 and Hairtail-1 program in the adjacent VIC/P70.

Blackback and the new deepwater wildcat wells are about 90km off the coast in between 350-700m of water.
 
The same rig recently drilled for Cooper Energy at Casino in the Otway Basin earlier in the year, and more recently at the Sole gas field development in the Gippsland Basin.
 
The work in L/20 comes almost 20 years after Blackback was put into production and will involve the Blackback A-1A, Blackback A-2 and Blackback A-3 wells being permanently abandoned ...
