Already National Grid Transco Plc, the UK's largest utility, said it may seek a partner to bid for some of Epic's natural gas pipelines as it continues to evaluate electricity and gas transmission investments in Australia, including Epic and Duke Energy's local assets.

The London-based company is currently building the $700 million power cable between the mainland and Tasmania, its only investment in Australia.

A number of Australian bidders have already expressed interest in pieces of the Epic pie although early reports suggest the embattled company will have to settle for far less than the $2.4 billion it paid for the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline around four years ago.

Epic has also caused a stir in Perth during the week as it reduced gas supplies to energy provider Western Power in the middle of summer to perform some compressor maintenance.

The shortage has left Perth under the threat of rolling blackouts if temperatures maintain their traditionally high levels over consecutive days.
