Israeli pollies call for Dimona shutdown

Three unidentified members of the Israeli Knesset have called for the shutting down of the Dimona...

In a statement published in the media, the three stated, "Existing information indicates that the life expectancy of a reactor is 40 years [and] the Dimona reactor was completed in the early 1960s."

"Because of growing malfunctions, the radioactive materials there have become an environmental hazard … endangering the health of workers at the reactor," they added. The three are - reportedly - also unhappy at the level of secrecy that surrounds the reactor, which "has prevented any extra-governmental supervision, depriving the public and the Knesset of the opportunity to evaluate the extent to which the reactor poses a danger".

Understandably, their bill has received much flak from other Knesset legislators, with its biggest critic, National Union MK Aryeh Eldad, stating, "[I will] advise Israel's Atomic Energy Commission to petition the High Court of Justice to have Hadash closed down."
