The planned sanctions would have seen future investments by American energy firms in Syria’s oil and gas sector curbed, Syrian aircraft would have been banned from US airspace and all blocking all transactions involving the Syrian government, barring food and medicine.
According to the source, “The situation on the ground in the Middle East warrants that the announcement be postponed. The sanctions [are] now likely to be delayed until mid-April.”
Unidentified administration officials have reiterated that the president “was not backing away from the sanctions, under legislation he signed into law in December [2003]”. The legislation is known as the Syria Accountability Act.
