Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure, Energy and Resources, Bryan Green, told a Scrutiny Committee hearing in Hobart that Origin Energy would use the platform to develop the $500 million BassGas project.

"The platform will support the production wellheads, the processing facilities and the utilities required to treat the gas to the point where it can be sent to shore by pipeline," he said.

"As well as the offshore platform, the BassGas project involves a sub-sea pipeline to the Victorian coast and onshore pipeline to a gas plant south of Lang Lang in Victoria.

"Delivery of gas to Victoria will give Tasmania security of supply via the Tasmanian natural gas pipeline from Longford in Victoria to Bell Bay," said Green.

"It is also needed to help meet the projected doubling in demand for gas in south eastern Australia over the next 20 years."
