An oil tanker impounded in Nigeria on suspicion of smuggling has disappeared with a full 30,000 barrel load and its crew, doing little to dispel the air of corruption in the oil rich state.

The African Pride was last seen in August with the local media, navy and police all pointing the finger of blame for the disappearance, while the government attempts to reaffirm support for its struggle to police oil smuggling off West Africa.

Anthony Aziegbemi, chairman of the investigating committee said: “This is, to say the least, a national embarrassment. It is an episode that belonged to the old Nigeria.”
