Following the success of Victoria's water-wise campaigns that have seen home water usage reduced by 19.5% since 1990, state environment minister John Thwaites is hoping for a similar win on the renewable energy front.

"People have been very water-wise, but we're not very energy-wise," he said.

The last 18 months has seen a 400% increase in the number of Victorians using renewable energy, with 40,000 homes (2% of total) flicking the green switch.

The current state-based renewable power schemes where households pay a surcharge to receive energy from renewable sources are due to come under a proposed single national scheme in July 2005.
