US commits $2bn to climate change

US PRESIDENT George Bush announced his government would commit $US2 billion ($A2.3 billion) over the next three years to create a new international clean energy technology fund to combat climate change during his annual State of the Union speech to Congress.

Along with contributions from other countries, this fund will increase and accelerate the deployment of cleaner, more efficient technologies in developing nations like India and China and help leverage substantial private-sector capital by making clean energy projects more financially attractive, Bush said.

The US Government will host the second Major Economies Meeting on Energy Security and Climate Change over the next two days.
