Hird - who has worked in the industry for 30 years, primarily in the North Sea - will oversee the projected growth to support key customers in the Australian market.
In other personnel moves: Drillsearch extends managing director's contract; AED Oil shake-up; Armour adds alternate director; HB Rentals appoints a director for its eastern hemisphere operations; Glacier Energy appoints MD to two new divisions; and ROVOP expands management team.
Drillsearch Energy has extended managing director Brad Lingo's contract. He was appointed on June 15, 2009.
Drillsearch chairman Jim McKerlie said he was confident of the future of the company under Lingo.
This comes after news the company suffered a less than perfect January, with three of its wells plugged and abandoned.
AED Oil has had a shake-up of the board after the resignation of four directors late last year.
David Dix, John Branson, John Imle and Barry McGuiness resigned in November.
David van Oppen, Mark Licciado and Phillip Anthon are the three new directors.
Tim Baldwin remains a director and Trevor Slater retains his position as company secretary.
While non-executive director Bill Stubbs is on holiday, the company has appointed Matthew Stubbs as alternate director.
Bill Stubbs will be away until March 23.
Matthew Stubbs is managing director of Allier Capital and has had 15 years in investment banking experience.
Accommodation specialist HB Rentals has appointed Norman Porter to the position of director - eastern hemisphere. This gives him oversight of sales and operations throughout Europe and the Middle East.
Porter most recently served as HB Rentals' eastern hemisphere operations manager.
Glacier Energy Services
Oilfield services specialist Glacier has created offshore and engineering divisions, appointing Mark Derry and George Leggate as managing directors.
Derry takes responsibility for the offshore business, which comprises the Roberts Pipeline Machining and Site Machining Services businesses.
He is a former chief operating officer of Ashtead Technology's offshore division, managing director of SBS Marine and head of UK business for Hydratight.
Leggate takes on the engineering division, which is built around its Wellclad business.
He recently returned to Glacier to head Wellclad, a company he founded in 1997.
Moray Melhuish has joined specialist ROVOP as commercial director, while Mike Duffus has been hired as a project manager.
Mellhuish takes up his role after two years as sales manager with Subsea 7. Prior to that, he held senior positions within Forum Energy Technologies and service specialist, Score Group.
Duffus joins from Bibby Remote Intervention. He has worked in the subsea industry for 30 years, starting as a diver in 1975.
Executive director Byron Grote has elected to retire from the BP board of directors following the Annual General Meeting on April 11.
BP group chief executive Bob Dudley paid tribute to Grote's 33 years of service.
"Byron has played key roles at critical moments of the company's history, most notably in the integrations of Amoco and Arco, and more recently guiding BP through the financial challenges following the incidents of April 2010," he said.
"The company owned him a great debt of gratitude."
