Targeting completion in 2018, the scope of work includes upgrading three KNPC-operated refineries with new facilities for the Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery including a vacuum distillation unit, delayed coker unit and atmospheric residue desulphurisation unit.
Japan's JGC, with the other two joint venture members coming from South Korea, estimated that its stake of the contract was worth $US4.9 billion ($A5.4 billion).
The contact covers more than EPC work as it also includes pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up and performance testing services.
JGC built the MAA refinery in the 1980s.
