Science finds spill options

A STAINLESS steel mesh developed at Ohio State University could make a big difference for future oil spill clean-ups and help identify sub-surface reservoirs, while a Houston-based consortium backed by some of the world's biggest oilers says it has developed a new spill containment system.

The Ohio-developed mesh allows water to pass through while scooping up oil.

The mesh was inspired by lotus leaves, whose bumpy surfaces naturally repel water but not oil.
