According to CNOOC Ltd's general manager for the Project Development Team, Tian Nan, "This is a very important project and automation is at the heart of this development [and] we selected Honeywell because of its excellent performance on previous offshore projects."

The oil field, located offshore Bohai Bay, is one of China's largest oilfields and, as such, is an important investment for both CNOOC Ltd and ChevronTexaco. Part of both companies' investment will be in a new main FPSO platform and six well-head platforms. Many of these components are still under construction.

Under the terms of the contract, Honeywell will install the Experion Process Knowledge System, which will automate operations throughout the offshore drilling facility. Experion will also provide process monitoring and control, fire and gas safety and emergency shut down systems. These automation systems will be installed on the FPSO and the six well-heads.
