CHINA is far from meeting its obligations to buy US$52 billion worth of US energy products over two years, struck as part of a wide-ranging agreement that took in agriculture and manufactured goods that was made to end the trade war that began in 2018.

For the first six months of the deal, which came into effect in February, China has only taken 5% of what it should have for the period and met 20% of its total obligations.
