Reciprocating engine generators can be deployed at oil and gas sites to support the resilience of a facility's operations, help to improve efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions.

Gas and diesel engines can be used for base-load power or for backup generation especially in remote locations where grid power is limited or unavailable. Gas engines also be used as combined heat and power units, to recover heat from the generators for use in boilers or for local processes.

Alternatively, surplus heat can be used in absorption chillers to deliver cooling for refrigeration or air conditioning, a process called trigeneration.

Emissions can be reduced by increasing the efficiency of electricity generation, from the reduction in flaring of waste gases and by the displacement of diesel as a source of backup power.

The engines can accept a variety of sources of fuels such as natural gas, flare gas (also known as associated petroleum gas), coal bed methane / coal seam gas or liquified or compressed natural gas, diesel, and crude oil.
