Under the agreement, Oil Search will manage the project to provide primary health care services for the communities in the area with a focus on HIV prevention; diagnosing and treating sexually transmitted infections; providing voluntary counselling; testing for HIV as well as treating and caring for those affected with AIDS.

The health department and the Asian Development Bank will provide technical and financial support for the project.

Oil Search general manager Grea Aopi said the agreement showed the company’s continued commitment to improving the health and welfare of people working and living in the surrounding communities.

“Along with other company initiatives, this agreement provides a framework through which Oil Search can expand its HIV programs within the company and surrounding communities, in collaboration with the National Department of Health,” Aopi said.

PNG Secretary of Health Nicholas Mann said concurrent with this agreement, Population Services International and Alternate Visions, with financial support from the ADB, will launch targeted behaviour change campaigns within the Southern Highlands communities.
