Carbon tax mooted for WA

THE Western Australian Government may decide to introduce a carbon tax of up to $25 a tonne, as part of moves towards reducing the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Carbon tax mooted for WA

According to a report in the Australian newspaper, the proposal is among several measures recommended in a report to be released today by a special taskforce set up to examine ways of reducing emissions from WA electricity generators.

The report is understood to recommend an emissions trading scheme and the adoption of a 20% renewable energy target by 2020.

The carbon tax proposal appears to have the backing of Prime Minister John Howard, who this morning said in his weekly radio address: “Market mechanisms, including carbon pricing, will be integral to any long-term response to climate change.”

A taskforce set up by the Federal Government is this week expected to release its own discussion paper on the feasibility of both a global and domestic emissions trading system.
