CLEAN energy lobby the Smart Energy Council has attempted to throw a spanner in the works of the National Energy Guarantee, urging any support for what it currently calls a “junk policy” to be conditional on commitments to stronger emissions reductions targets.

The council made the request of Victoria in particular, ahead of the 2018 Victorian Smart Energy Summit taking place in Melbourne today which will bring together developers, investors and sector experts.
 
The group noted that the Victoria's recent large-scale renewable energy auction attracted bids for 3500 megawatts of new wind and solar capacity, which was about six times the capacity the state government put to tender. 
 
While "the future of renewables looks bright in Victoria, this could all come quickly crashing down if the National Energy Guarantee is approved in its current form," Council CEO John Grimes said.
