Abbott again threatens NEG progress

FORMER prime minister Tony Abbott has raised the prospect of crossing the floor on the National Energy Guarantee as part of a growing internal challenge to the Turnbull government’s signature energy policy.

Earlier this week, Abbott renewed his attack on the NEG in Coalition partyroom discussions, joining fellow travellers Eric Abetz, Andrew Gee, Craig Kelly and Ian MacDonald.

The conservative faction particularly opposes commitments to emissions reductions targets and most recently took umbrage with federal energy minister Josh Frydenberg's commitment to state and territory counterparts that the trajectory of cuts would be steady over 10 years, rather than being implemented largely at the tail end.

Abbott and his supporters also want the government to commit to the building of a new coal-fired power station, arguing it would be comparable to federal support for the expanded Snowy Hydro scheme.
